Hello.
[00:00:09.22] - Taylor
Hello.
[00:00:10.00] - Gordon
My name's Gordon from Drayson Design.
[00:00:11.26] - Taylor
And I'm Taylor from the Creative Tinker.
[00:00:13.20] - Gordon
And welcome to "This Week With Taylor and Gordon," a weekly podcast and vidcast, where we talk about things that have affected our businesses over the last seven days. And thank you for joining us.
[00:00:23.13] - Taylor
Thank you. Welcome back.
[00:00:24.24] - Gordon
So it's been a very busy week for me as far as performance goes. If you were listening to last week's episode, you'll know that I'm in pantomime this week, and we have another three performances to go. So we got one tonight and then two tomorrow. And, really exciting, tomorrow has, well, I think it's sold out, which is pretty good.
[00:00:49.10] - Taylor
That's exciting.
[00:00:49.27] - Gordon
180 seats, two performances, and they're both sold out, which is very, very good. If you are listening to this on Friday, then get yourself a ticket at sdclub.org.uk. If you're in the Croydon area, I'll put a link in the show notes, but that is only for tonight because tomorrow is sold out. And it's been quite tiring, all these shows. You've been there as well, doing all the backstage as well.
[00:01:18.09] - Taylor
Yeah.
[00:01:18.29] - Gordon
Have you been enjoying that?
[00:01:20.05] - Taylor
I have. It's always good fun. It's always nice to see people that I only ever see once a year. And yeah, it's just nice to get out.
[00:01:28.19] - Gordon
So let's go straight into our topics. I think I'm going to go first because we've been talking about panto. One of the things that I do with the panto is I video it. So I've been doing this for many years now, and originally I distributed them on VHS. That's how long ago it was that I started doing these. And then we moved to DVD, and now I'm slowly transitioning into streaming. So we're doing DVD and streaming now, or both, which is what some people decide they want to go for. We've spoken about this in the past. We've spoken about the new system that we both created together that solved that problem for me. But one thing I'm unable to do is to actually film the show when I'm in it. Obviously, that's not possible. And I do like to have two cameras, one as a wide shot, so it's a fixed seeing all of the stage throughout the whole show, and one that goes in a bit closer and you can get close ups and you can then cut between the two. So, if there's any issues, any minor issues on the recording, then we can cut between the two, keep the same soundtrack, whichever one it is, and all is good.
[00:02:48.24] - Gordon
Unless, of course, you have issues. Now, we recorded it on Wednesday and Thursday. Wednesday night was a bit of a disaster. We had a technical issue with one of the cameras. So my digital SLR has a cable coming out and goes into a box with a hard drive and a screen, and that, for some reason, decided to turn off halfway through the first half. Don't know why. I can't get the footage back at the minute. It says, "Do you want to recover this?" And I've said "yes" and left it all night and still nothing. So I don't think I'm going to be able to recover that, which is a big, big problem for me. And the second half, we fixed the issue, or Taylor did after coming to speak to me, but the camera tripod got knocked slightly. So instead of it being nice and square, it's sort of off to one side and you're missing a part of the side of the theatre stage, which is, again, not very good. And we also had another technical issue with the other camera in the first half where it just glitched and we lost about three, four minutes worth at a couple of places during the first half.
[00:04:06.17] - Gordon
Now, the problem I have is that the reason I film it twice is because there are two different children's groups. So I do one full length video, which I'm going to attempt to do with the Thursday night video, and that's the master, and that's the one I'll use to edit between the two angles. And then we I have the other night with the other children, and I do just the bits with the children in. But we have children in the cast, so there's going to be lots of bits that are needed to make sure that all the cast members are covered. And that is a potential issue for me. I'm not entirely sure I'm going to be able to do it. We shall see. But what is the moral of this? Well, I did everything I could possibly do to make sure that the technical side of it was all set up. And because I was in it, I was passing over to someone else to film it for me. And if an issue happens when they're filming, they don't know my equipment as well as I do. They don't know what to do. They just have to carry on.
[00:05:18.10] - Gordon
And so that's what happened. And we tried to put some things into place for the second night. I've yet to see that footage, so I don't know if it came out well or not. I am really hoping with my fingers crossed that it has come out fine. But if not, I don't know quite what I'm going to do. We don't get another chance to film this. So wish me luck with that. Moral of the story, do everything you possibly can, but there are going to be things that are outside of your control and you just have to manage, really. I'm going to see what I can do. That's one of the reasons I have two cameras, but I'm going to see what I can do and see if I can salvage enough footage to make the Wednesday night passible. That's it. I'll possibly let you know how that went next week. Taylor, what would you like to talk about?
[00:06:15.29] - Taylor
So I want to talk about the Oura ring. So I mentioned that I got this for Christmas and it's been a couple of weeks, yeah, about two weeks or so since I've had it. And I've been really enjoying it. It's really interesting looking at the data that it collects. I think the most interesting data that I find is the stress levels because it can figure out when I most likely have been, was stressed and shows you on a graph, which is quite cool. And you can look back over multiple days.
[00:06:49.23] - Gordon
And pinpoint moments that you know you were stressed and when they were during the day.
[00:06:55.15] - Taylor
Yeah. And it's just... A lot of the data just, it gives me reminders to get up and move. It adds in things like naps. So if I have a nap in the day for whatever reason, it will say, "do you want to add this to your timeline?" And that's not something that the Apple Watch ever does. It doesn't really track sleep outside of the sleeping time normally. And so being able to add those in, it really helps because it makes the sleep data inside of the Apple Health app a lot more accurate.
[00:07:35.28] - Gordon
We should point out, in fact, that you do sometimes have a nap during the day, but mainly because you've got early morning breakfast meetings that you go to, and sometimes you work late into the night, depending on time zones. Pardon me. So it's not you being lazy, it's you catching up on sleep, really. And the Apple Watch doesn't expect that. Can I ask a quick question before you finish, before you carry on, sorry. How does your ring work out stress?
[00:08:06.13] - Taylor
I believe that it just uses things like heart rate and probably a couple of other different metrics.
[00:08:12.25] - Gordon
Okay.
[00:08:13.19] - Taylor
If you're not moving for example, if you're not doing any sort of physical activity or anything like that and your heart rate suddenly spikes, that can either mean two things. You're having a stroke or something, or you're most likely stressed, because your heart rate will obviously increase.
[00:08:30.19] - Gordon
That's interesting. I didn't know what the metric was for that.
[00:08:34.00] - Taylor
Probably a couple of other things. There's probably other sensors in there that it uses to accompany it, but that's, I think the main one is the heart rate, which makes a lot of sense. Obviously, people get stressed, the heart rate normally goes up. So, yeah, I just overall, I really enjoy it. It's not too intrusive to wear. I don't think about it most of the time. I get people commenting and say, "Is that that tracking ring," I say "yes, yes it is." But yeah, overall, I really like it. The battery life is pretty good. Lasts just under a week, I think. I try and take it off when I'm doing things where I know it might get scratched. So things like panto and the gym. But apart from that, I keep on as much as I can.
[00:09:23.12] - Gordon
Very good. And this data is obviously being taken into Apple Health and it has its own API as well. So are you eventually going to be using this data and putting it onto your personal website?
[00:09:36.28] - Taylor
At some point, I would like to do that, but I think I need to understand more of the data first and then obviously look at the API in the future and see how I can use it best, and what data I want to pull out as well.
[00:09:50.11] - Gordon
Very good. It's a shame that it doesn't track your panto backstage because there's a lot of effort going on there. But you're right, you don't want it to be damaged.
[00:09:59.23] - Taylor
My Apple Watch will record the activity. So if I'm moving and stuff and steps, etc, are still getting tracked, just not by the ring.
[00:10:08.14] - Gordon
Very good. Does it track your heart rate? I can't remember.
[00:10:11.11] - Taylor
Yes.
[00:10:11.28] - Gordon
Okay, very good. Sorry, the watch.
[00:10:14.27] - Taylor
Yeah.
[00:10:15.08] - Gordon
Yeah. Okay, good. Amazing. So you're happy with it so far? You recommend it at this point?
[00:10:21.13] - Taylor
Yeah, really, really liking it and really enjoying it. And yes, it's a nice... It fits well. It's a nice colour.
[00:10:29.12] - Gordon
You were trying to find out if there was a 3D printed case that you can print for your ring. Did you find one in the end?
[00:10:38.12] - Taylor
I found a couple that were more for the chargers, so you could charge it on the go, for example, and you just hook it up to a battery pack. But I more just wanted something that didn't require the charger, and I could just put into a little case or whatever, so I could put it in the bag, whatever, without it getting scratched up.
[00:10:57.14] - Gordon
Okay. Very good. Maybe you're going to need to put it onto your charger and make a little box for the charger. That way you can keep it nice and safe, possibly with a little hole for the cable to go in. Yeah, that might be a nice option.
[00:11:14.29] - Taylor
Yeah.
[00:11:16.05] - Gordon
That's everything for me this week.
[00:11:18.08] - Taylor
And me as well.
[00:11:19.00] - Gordon
Quite a quick one relatively compared to other ones that we've had. But it's been such a busy week. I've been so tired, honestly. The Saturday and the Sunday last week, I did two shows on each of the days, a matinee in an evening, and I came back and that was it. I was just so tired. Really takes it out of you. As well as all the things that go with performing, like putting the makeup on, making sure your costume's in the right place, making sure you get the right lines, making sure you get to the stage at the right time. There's so much going on. It's a lot of mental workout as well as physical. But that will all be finished by the next episode when you can join us next week. So as always, you can like, share and subscribe. We have our very own YouTube channel.
[00:12:10.23] - Taylor
You can also go to our website thisweekwith.co.uk to find all of our past episodes.
[00:12:15.17] - Gordon
And you can leave comments on the YouTube channel, but not on the website. And of course, if you would prefer to listen to our episodes, we're on all the major podcast platforms. Thank you for joining us. We'll be back with you at 1pm next Friday. Until then, my name is Gordon and my company is Drayson Design.
[00:12:36.04] - Taylor
And I'm Taylor from the Creative Tinker.
[00:12:38.26] - Gordon
Goodbye.
[00:12:39.12] - Taylor
Bye.
