[00:00:09.600] - Gordon
Hello.

[00:00:10.680] - Taylor
Hello.

[00:00:11.120] - Gordon
My name's Gordon from Drayson Design.

[00:00:13.140] - Taylor
And I'm Taylor from The Creative Tinker.

[00:00:15.720] - Gordon
And welcome to "This Week With Taylor and Gordon," a weekly podcast and vidcast, where we talk about things that have affected our businesses as self-employed people over the last seven days. And welcome back.

[00:00:27.710] - Taylor
Welcome back.

[00:00:28.370] - Gordon
So we are going back to the previous camera, because if you were with us last week, you'll know that we were trying out a DSLR. And what did we think of it?

[00:00:42.570] - Taylor
Well, it was a mirrorless camera.

[00:00:43.380] - Gordon
It was a mirrorless, yes, you're right. But it's a DSLR type camera just with a mirror rather than straight through the lens. So how did we think that went?

[00:00:53.020] - Taylor
I think that the, I think it was the lighting mainly that caused the kind of pixelation, I guess. I don't think the settings were dialled in properly. And also the lighting isn't exactly the best.

[00:01:11.840] - Gordon
Well, we're just using house lighting here, so there's no studio lighting going on here. And, you know, we're a little bit at the mercy of the sun as well; so depending on what comes in through the window. So it looks like we need a little bit of, a little bit more testing on that camera. And, you know, we may come back to that one in the future. So any news first of all?

[00:01:34.700] - Taylor
No news for me this week.

[00:01:36.720] - Gordon
News for me; we've got an announcement on Epic versus Apple. So for those of you who were watching about, must have been about 50 episodes ago now, 40, 45 episodes. We can look it up because we have a search facility on the website. I'll put the actual episode that I referred to in the show notes once I've had a chance to look it up. But the ruling came back and Epic lost nine of the ten points that they were trying to win. And the one that they did win Apple are potentially going to be appealing, but Epic are definitely appealing all nine of theirs. So currently, if you are a Fortnite fan, well, you're still not going to be able to download it on Apple devices currently, and that's down to Epic, 100% down to Epic and Tim Sweeney. He seems to be just sort of throwing his toys out the pram, and it's not going his way at the moment. So that's a little bit of an update on a previous story. Let's see, shall we, shall I start with my topics this week?

[00:02:51.170] - Taylor
Okay.

[00:02:51.170] - Gordon
Because my topics are sort of catch ups. There's two catch ups. One... Let's just deal with the first one first, shall we? This weekend just gone, we were discussing last week, and I said I would let you know how it went. And the day itself on the Saturday, [coughs] pardon me, was actually really good. It was very well attended and the weather was good. We had a little bit of mist at the beginning, but no rain as such. And as we went through nearer to the end of the event near the late afternoon, it was getting really sunny, really hot, and we had lots of people still there as we were about to close, which was lovely. I managed to pretty much lose my voice. I was coughing a lot before, as you know, and I didn't really stop coughing. And so I was doing the whole event while coughing. Not too much, but I was still coughing, and I ended up with a very sore throat and it was very gruff and hoarse, wasn't it?

[00:04:02.520] - Taylor
Yeah.

[00:04:02.520] - Gordon
And as you can probably hear, it's not quite back to how it should be. It's still a little bit sore. And I had a show on the Sunday and that was really good as well. Lovely family that I've been to twice before to do other children in the family. And this was for four year old, lovely little girl. And we were in a house and it was in a room and I took my microphone so that I didn't have to talk too much. But I did find even though I was talking very quietly into the microphone, I still ended up coughing quite a bit. And I was glad I only really had that one show to do, because I think if I had any more, I would have really struggled. But yes, all that planning and all of the organisation that went into the Sanderstead Community Day, we had paid off. It paid off in in buckets and spades because lots of people came. Lots of people had a really good time. The bands were good. The Tug of War was interesting. Did you see any?

[00:05:15.460] - Taylor
Yeah.

[00:05:15.460] - Gordon
So the Tug of War was a three-way Tug of War. So it was a triangle of rope. And the idea being that you had three teams, one on each corner and they had to pull backwards so that they could reach down onto the ground and pick up a wooden ring while still holding on to the rope. And so it meant we could have more people involved. And we had six sessions of 15 minutes each and managed to fill pretty much all of them by having these Tug of War matches. And people were crowding around and cheering and supporting for whoever they knew that was on the teams, or just, you know, they picked a team.

[00:05:57.840] - Taylor
Yeah.

[00:05:57.840] - Gordon
And it was a lot of fun. It worked really, really well. I was very pleased with how that went. How was it for you? Because you were up there, weren't you?

[00:06:07.440] - Taylor
Yeah, it was good. You know, the food was nice. Very busy, which was obviously good. Lots of stalls.

[00:06:13.320] - Gordon
What did you have to eat?

[00:06:14.820] - Taylor
I had a big sprinkle donut, which was very nice.

[00:06:17.800] - Gordon
A big sprinkle donut. Well, who doesn't want a big sprinkle donut? Excellent. Very nice. Good. So that is a catch up on my weekend. Now, another thing that I said we would catch up on involves you in fact.

[00:06:32.640] - Taylor
Yeah.

[00:06:32.640] - Gordon
So we were talking a while back about a 5G router, that was using Vodaphone as the supplier. And Taylor had just got it, and the idea was it was going to give him a lot faster speed for upload, importantly, but also download. And we said we would come back in a few, sort of a month or so's time and let you know how it had gone. And so here we are about that time. How did it go?

[00:07:05.370] - Taylor
Yes, so on the whole it's miles miles better than what we have.

[00:07:10.560] - Gordon
We've got them both running in tandem at the moment. And that's quite good because they're both different suppliers, and one is coming in through a cable and the other is coming over the air. So, you know, we've got two different technologies to rely on really.

[00:07:24.000] - Taylor
Yeah. So I mean, it works really well. I get better speeds than I do on the old router. You know, it's really nice to be able to have fast Internet, and not have to wait for stuff to load. You know I do get the odd time when my internet will drop, or the connection will be kind of not as good, but then that's to be expected because it is...

[00:07:42.130] - Gordon
And is that because of the weather do you think?

[00:07:43.800] - Taylor
I'm not sure. I think it's just. you know the winds. It could be the wind. It could be, you know, like you said, the weather maybe. But it's also, I just think it just picks up and drops as you do when you're out on your phone. You just...

[00:07:55.760] - Gordon
On your mobile, yep.

[00:07:56.442] - Taylor
Yeah you just sometimes...

[00:07:56.820] - Gordon
Because that's what it is, a mobile signal.

[00:08:00.540] - Taylor
Yeah. And also the number people that are using it, I think at the time as well. Because everyone's all using the same masts for their phone devices. But on the whole, it's really, really good. And one of the reasons for getting it was obviously to have a better experience browsing the web when I'm doing my work. But also, I wanted to stream. And this wasn't something that was possible to do on our old internet because it just wasn't stable enough to be able to hold a good enough signal.

[00:08:32.600] - Gordon
Upload signal.

[00:08:33.600] - Taylor
Yeah, exactly. And that's something that I've recently started doing and I've been really enjoying it. I stream at least once a week, which is my minimum quota that I have to hit as I'm part of something called "The Claw Team" on Twitch. This is a group of web developers. [Gordon makes a claw with his hand] Yeah. Well, it's actually a moth. The Claw Team is actually a moth, which is our mascot, I guess. But it's set up by White Panther, who is an amazing streamer, web developer. She is a Contentful Developer Advocate. That is what she does.

[00:09:10.740] - Gordon
That's difficult to say.

[00:09:12.420] - Taylor
Well, Developer Advocate for Contentful.

[00:09:15.230] - Gordon
Okay.

[00:09:16.600] - Taylor
So she does lots of...

[00:09:17.110] - Gordon
So just for people who don't know, Contentful is a...?

[00:09:20.860] - Taylor
So, Contentful is similar to WordPress. It's a content management system, and she basically does streams, talks, blog posts.

[00:09:30.610] - Gordon
And is that her job? That's what she does?

[00:09:31.580] - Taylor
Yes. So she's a Developer Advocate. Which I'd never heard of before. Some of the people in the Discord had mentioned it, but it's basically just a, she gets paid to kind of promote Contentful, try out new technology, attend conferences and talks and things like that.

[00:09:50.910] - Gordon
Sounds great for someone who's a developer first and foremost.

[00:09:55.260] - Taylor
Yeah, exactly. So it's set up by White Panther, who hit partner on Twitch a couple of weeks ago.

[00:10:02.140] - Gordon
Yaay!

[00:10:02.140] - Taylor
About over a month ago now. But one of the things you get as being a partner is you get to create your own team. So she created "The Claw Team," and invited lots of streamers, specifically in the kind of science and tech development category or like game design, to be part of it. And I was invited. And the one thing they say is, you know, you need to stream once, at least once a week, to be part of it, and that's what I've been doing. So it's been really fun. I get to kind of just build and make stuff, just have fun to see what I can come up with really. Have a bit of fun. You know we, in a recent one, we use "Meme Box," which is another Claw Team member's product, which is kind of a way to have chat; be able to trigger images and videos on stream from a command, which is quite fun; especially depending on what you're talking about, you can have these pop up. So one of the things I have is the "IT Crowd:" "Have you tried turning it off and on again?" So whenever something's not working, whether it's an app's crashed or a website's cached, for example, I have that on standby to be able to play. Or if I get something and it works, I've got the... Oh I don't know what it's from, it's "a great success." That one. Which I think, I can't think of who it's, who says it, but it's...

[00:11:41.500] - Gordon
Okay.

[00:11:41.500] - Taylor
Quite a...

[00:11:43.781] - Gordon
It's not Boris or Ali G, it's the other one isn't it.

[00:11:44.620] - Taylor
"Borat."

[00:11:46.361] - Gordon
"Borat," there you go.

[00:11:46.370] - Taylor
From "Borat," which is quite fun. So whenever I get something, build something and it works, I have that that people can use. But yeah, just building lots of other stuff. So I've built Trello clones, working on my personal website, building my girlfriend's e-commerce art site.

[00:12:02.560] - Gordon
Nice.

[00:12:02.560] - Taylor
So I get to just build stuff that's not client work. It's good fun and yeah, just been really enjoying it. It's nice to be able to interact with the chat and just see what happens really.

[00:12:16.000] - Gordon
I should explain when Taylor says, you know, the technology we had before wasn't any good for streaming. Obviously, a video feed, which is what we're doing now was streaming fine. But what you're doing is you're now streaming a video feed, but you're also video, sorry, you're also sending a stream of what's on your computer as well.

[00:12:39.164] - Taylor
Yeah.

[00:12:39.200] - Gordon
So that is giving a lot more load to the...

[00:12:43.960] - Taylor
Like having browser and browser source overlays which interact so people can use 'Twitch Chat' to play the drop game, for example, which is where you type 'drop' and you have a landing pad and your person kind of parachutes down to land on the target; well that's the aim at least.

[00:13:01.170] - Gordon
And so you need a faster stream and a higher bandwidth to be able to send all of this information at once, which is something that we're not doing obviously; we've just got a video feed and that's it really. So, the stream we had, a stream we use for this is fine, but it wasn't good enough for what you're doing now.

[00:13:28.660] - Taylor
Yep.

[00:13:28.660] - Gordon
So if people want to sort of sign up and find out when you're going to be streaming, how do they do that?

[00:13:36.590] - Taylor
So you can go to twitch.tv/tdrayson, which will take you to my Twitch page. You can follow me and it will send you notifications when I go live, either an email, or in the Twitch app, or your browser, wherever you have it set for notifications. And yeah, I don't really post it too many places. I get a notification alert in the Discord for The Claw, so you know The Claw Team and all the other people in the Discord come and hang out and know I'm live streaming. I sent it to a couple of other friends that aren't part of that Discord server. But, you know, I just do it because I enjoy it more than anything, rather than trying to, you know, get as many people to watch, really.

[00:14:19.780] - Gordon
Well, the nice thing about it is that if you are ever interested in how a developer goes about something, or how they approach a particular problem, it's quite nice to just sort of sit and watch the thought process that goes into it; and how it happens; and testing it; and finding out what is wrong; and diagnosing it. And, you know, if you're interested in that sort of thing, as far as websites and coding go, there's a lot of people who stream on Twitch, who do this sort of thing, but you know, come and watch someone you know, come and watch Taylor Drayson, TDrayson, and you know, see how he approaches it. And it's quite nice as well, because viewers can message you as well. They can leave chat messages, which you then interact with.

[00:15:12.300] - Taylor
Yeah.

[00:15:12.300] - Gordon
You know, there's normally a bit of a delay, but it's pretty much live and, you know, you can sort of influence what's happening. You know, if Taylor's asking for suggestions or, you know, he's got a decision to make one way or the other, you can be part of that decision process. It's really therapeutic, actually watching someone else work. I've sat and watched several of his streams while I'm doing other things, so it's in the background. And it's really quite soothing to watch. If you feel like you just want to sit and watch it for a while, it sort of gives you that boost to go, you know, "I can't just sit and watch someone else work, and I have to get back to working myself." And it's sort of a way to push yourself forward, and be what's the word?

[00:16:04.200] - Taylor
Productive.

[00:16:05.090] - Gordon
Yeah, that's not the word I was thinking of. When you've got someone who is there to make sure you get on with it, someone who is... I forget the word, forget it, forget it. It will come to me as soon as we stop this stream I'm sure of it.

[00:16:18.660] - Taylor
Accountable.

[00:16:19.340] - Gordon
That's the word. Or it will come before. Excellent. It helps you to become accountable for your work as well. So you don't end up just losing the whole day. Talking of losing the whole day, just to finish off, I went and got petrol today. Have a guess how long that took me. It's just petrol.

[00:16:37.470] - Taylor
Well it should be ten minutes.

[00:16:38.430] - Gordon
Yeah, should be ten minutes, shouldn't it? Yeah. And guess how many petrol stations I decided to go through?

[00:16:45.320] - Taylor
Well, it should be one.

[00:16:46.940] - Gordon
One. Yeah, of course. You just pop out to one petrol station takes ten minutes right? No! No. Four petrol stations, 2 hours.

[00:16:57.240] - Taylor
Sounds like a productive day.

[00:16:59.160] - Gordon
Yeah, just, the world has gone mad, honestly. I only went because I desperately needed fuel. I didn't go because I thought, "Ooh, I'm getting to halfway now. I need to get some more." I was actually on, I think I had about 40 miles left in the tank, which is not enough for my shows that are coming up. So I needed to go and get some more. And the place I went to, I think is being very sensible. They've put a limit of £35 worth of fuel for any one fill up. And I'm guessing, I don't know, but I'm guessing if you wanted to, you could go and queue up again and get £35 more. You know, I guess, I don't know if they would complain about that, but £35 gives me about a third of a tank, so... Just a bit over the third of a tank actually.

[00:17:48.970] - Taylor
They should set it so that if you've got more than a quarter, if you've got over a quarter left, you're not allowed to fill up.

[00:17:58.220] - Gordon
Well, I mean, for you, £35 is going to fill your tank, isn't it?

[00:18:02.780] - Taylor
Yeah.

[00:18:02.780] - Gordon
But for me...

[00:18:02.780] - Taylor
I mean, for people trying to fill...

[00:18:05.420] - Gordon
It's about half.

[00:18:05.420] - Taylor
They shouldn't allow you to fill up unless you've got less than a quarter left.

[00:18:09.610] - Gordon
Well, yeah.

[00:18:10.920] - Taylor
Because that would stop the issue.

[00:18:12.500] - Gordon
Yeah, I know. I think the fact that they're limiting it to £35 means that people can't come along with big containers and start filling them up as well. And then, you know, storing up. There's stories on the internet of people who've got like, ten of these fuel cans and they're filling all those as well as their car. And they're paying sort of £400 for fuel and its just getting silly. So putting a limit on, I think, is a very sensible way of doing it. And as long as that continues, when I get to the end of the fuel I've got, I'm not going to worry too much that it's going to be a whole day out of the office trying to get more fuel.

[00:18:55.960] - Taylor
Yep.

[00:18:55.960] - Gordon
So hopefully it will be a little while before I need it. But we will see.

[00:19:03.400] - Taylor
Yes.

[00:19:03.400] - Gordon
One last question on your 5G router.

[00:19:06.980] - Taylor
Yeah?

[00:19:06.980] - Gordon
Have you managed to get 5G?

[00:19:09.460] - Taylor
So I think that my hub, the light has not worked, because I have a 5G phone and I've put the SIM in, done a speed test, and I get the same speed from that where it says I've got 5G, as I do when it's plugged into the, or it's into the hub. So I think it's just the light is being a bit dodgy and not showing.

[00:19:33.040] - Gordon
Although the settings page is showing 4G, it's not showing 5G. So who knows? But as long as you're happy with what you've got at the moment, then it can only get better can't it?

[00:19:42.560] - Taylor
Yeah exactly.

[00:19:42.560] - Gordon
Because if it's designed correctly, which I'm assuming it is, and you're paying a subscription for this. So I'm assuming again that they will update the hardware should you need it, then you'll only get faster speeds as 5G gets better and hopefully you'll benefit from that in the future.

[00:20:06.230] - Taylor
Yeah, exactly.

[00:20:07.330] - Gordon
Cool. So that's my catch up. That's me done. What's your topic this week?

[00:20:11.510] - Taylor
Well mine was streaming.

[00:20:12.450] - Gordon
Oh I see, that's what it was, right. You just hijacked my topic by talking about your streaming.

[00:20:17.990] - Taylor
Yeah, I did.

[00:20:17.990] - Gordon
I see. Okay. So does that mean that you have nothing else to say? Are you happy?

[00:20:22.388] - Taylor
No, that's everything.

[00:20:22.640] - Gordon
Me too. So, thank you so much for joining us. Hopefully next week I'll have a proper voice again and I won't be sort of strained in any way. And if you are getting petrol, I wish you all the best in getting petrol without having to wait for too long.

[00:20:40.930] - Taylor
If you're in the UK.

[00:20:41.380] - Gordon
If you're in the UK. Yes, of course. Those who are not in the UK, we are having fuel. We haven't got a fuel shortages, we've got stupid media who are telling everyone that we've got problems and everyone's panic buying. There is no problems at the moment. The reason that we're having a problem is because people are panic buying. If they didn't panic buy we'd be fine. So anyway, that's it for today. If you have enjoyed it, then please like, share and subscribe. We're on Facebook and on YouTube.

[00:21:14.820] - Taylor
You can also go to our website: thisweekwith.co.uk to find all of our past episodes and also search for any topics that we've spoken about.

[00:21:23.680] - Gordon
And can I make a request? If you enjoyed this, please send the link to the website or to the YouTube, or Facebook, or if you're on a podcast, the link to that, to one friend. Someone you think might enjoy it, someone in business, someone who maybe likes tech, someone who just fancies a new channel to watch. Because by doing that, you will help us grow, and by helping us grow you'll help us to improve what you see and hear. The quality will get better and so will the content. So thank you very much. We'll see you again at 1pm next Friday. Until then, my name's Gordon, I'm from Drayson Design.

[00:22:11.520] - Taylor
