Hello.

[00:00:09.13] - Taylor
Hello.

[00:00:10.05] - Gordon
My name's Gordon from Drayson Design.

[00:00:12.03] - Taylor
And I'm Taylor from The Creative Tinker.

[00:00:13.29] - Gordon
And welcome to "This Week With Taylor and Gordon," a weekly podcast and vidcast where we talk about things that have affected our businesses over the last 7 days. And thank you for joining us.

[00:00:23.20] - Taylor
Welcome back.

[00:00:24.17] - Gordon
It's been a busy week. I always say that, but it has been a busy week. I quite like to keep my weeks busy.

[00:00:31.20] - Taylor
Me too.

[00:00:32.22] - Gordon
Never one just to sit around doing things, doing nothing, sorry. One thing that I will say is that if you are in the Croydon area, I'm in a play that starts, well, we would have, we'll be halfway through it this time next week. So next episode, we'll be halfway through it. So I'll probably have something to say about it. So it's The Diary of Anne Frank, and you can find details on parlorplayers.co.uk. It's going to be a good play, I think. Right, let's get straight into our topics. Would you like to go first, or shall I?

[00:01:13.02] - Taylor
You can go first this week.

[00:01:14.11] - Gordon
So this week, I was sending a very large file to somebody I know. Basically, I did a video, which I think I mentioned before on This Week With, for a college. They had their performing arts sort of end of year, end of two years, end of course, in fact, production. And I went along and videoed it. And so once I'd edited all that up, I then needed to send the file to them and it was 4.8 gigabytes.

[00:01:49.25] - Taylor
Quite big.

[00:01:50.21] - Gordon
It's quite big. Now, there were several choices. I can put it up on YouTube. Downside with that is that YouTube will then compress it, and then you won't get the highest quality if they then download it from their end. I can put it on Vimeo, and there's an option for a download link, which I could have done. I chose not to do that. wetransfer.com is a very good system for transferring files. However, you are limited, for the free account at least, to 2 gigabytes. So that's no good. And so I was thinking, "what can I do? How can I send it to them?" And I remembered that we bought a lifetime deal and it did just this. And I went to have a look to see if it had enough limits to allow me to send a 4.8 gigabyte file. And sure enough it did. There was unlimited size because it's only transferring and not storing. They sort of hold on to it for a period of time. I think I set it for 7 days and then I could upload it. They would get an email and then they could download it.

[00:03:09.20]
And I used something called Blaze. I think it's called Blaze Quantum. And I'd completely forgotten about this until I needed it. And then I suddenly thought, "oh, I remember buying something." And in fact, I looked it up. We paid $19 for that, which was a really good deal at the time. It was on AppSumo, which I've mentioned many times. And so my point here is that we have a spreadsheet. And the spreadsheet allows us to put all of our lifetime deals in. And so when we want to find something like this, just put in sort of "transfer" as a search term and it will come up with, you know, what lifetime deals we have. And I can then look through and see if there's anything suitable. And that's exactly what I did on this occasion. I found it, I made notes, I had all the login details in 1Password already, so I didn't have to worry about that. And I managed to get in really quickly and really easily and managed to do what I needed to do very, very well in a way that I wasn't expecting to be able to do when I started with the problem.

[00:04:24.23] - Taylor
Yeah.

[00:04:26.02] - Gordon
So my tendency to keep information and data and lists, in this case, of software that I've purchased came in really handy. And so buying a lifetime deal is fine, but if you forget you've got it, it's a wasted payment. If you're never going to use it because you've forgotten you have it, then it's worth nothing to you.

[00:04:55.17] - Taylor
Yeah.

[00:04:57.08] - Gordon
So we have this spreadsheet. In fact, I was going to talk to you about making some sort of little app that we could use because some of these lifetime deals do die. You know, the company goes out of business or they sunset their products or whatever it is. So, you know, making sure that you've got a live account is quite useful. So, I was thinking maybe we could create some sort of little app that we would be easily able to search and to be able to add new ones and disable ones that are no longer relevant.

[00:05:32.14] - Taylor
Yeah.

[00:05:33.29] - Gordon
Because that I think would make life even easier than the spreadsheet. The spreadsheet works fine. It's just, you know, it's a little bit limited with, you know. With a little app that's a web app that we could build we could make, you know, some nice, we can pull down the images from the website and stuff. And then if there isn't an image, maybe there's something wrong with the website and we can then check it and do it that way, instead of checking all of the sites all the time to see if they're all up.

[00:06:02.07] - Taylor
Yeah.

[00:06:03.15] - Gordon
So yeah, that was my sort of revelation, I guess, is probably one word to use. Just remembering that I had it, due to the data that I'd collected and the admin that I'd done at the time when I purchased it, to remind me what it did and that I had it and then I got to use it. So that was that. What would you like to speak about?

[00:06:27.02] - Taylor
So I have been fixing things in my flat, renovating things, and just resetting stuff. So my dishwasher currently is out of action. There's like an error code that just displays and I can't get rid of it. So I'm talking to support about that and trying to get that fixed. I had to pull out the whole dishwasher, sorry, the washing machine, to get access to the power plug. I took the whole kind of dishwasher apart as well, took the bottom off to inspect the underneath as they asked, and take photos. My coffee machine broke, which was an absolute pain, so I had to go and buy a new one because I can't deal without coffee. And I basically got the exact same version that I had, just a slightly newer one because they don't sell the one I have anymore. It's got— it has very kind of minimal things, you know, it steams milk a bit quicker, heats up a bit quicker. It can do things like timing of your espresso shots automatically without needing external scales or whatever. But yeah, I had to go and grab one of them, which was fun and an expensive trip. And yeah, because my washing— or my dishwasher was down I had to manually wash my dishes and stuff, which is fine, but I don't like to do like 1 or 2 dishes at a time because I feel like it's just a waste of water and things. So I kind of let them build up. But then I also had parts for the dishwasher that were scattered across the counter. I had plugs, I had towels that I'd been using to mop up the leaks from the dishwasher. I had two different coffee machines on the counter with coffee beans and all the different accessories everywhere because I'd had to pull it out and I had to check it and I had to try and fix— I tried to fix the coffee machine before I went and bought a new one. And so yeah, it's been a week of fixing stuff.

[00:08:34.14] - Gordon
Not really. You haven't managed to fix anything.

[00:08:36.22] - Taylor
Well, trying to fix stuff. But also just cleaning and resetting the house because it got quite messy and there's lots of things that needed sorting out where there was just things that had just been left on the side because I was like "no point putting it away" because, you know, I had the washing machine, for example, out in the middle of the kitchen for 2 days because I was like, I don't know if I'm going to need the power plug to, you know, and I don't want to have to keep pulling it in and out because it's quite heavy. And so yeah, for me it was a lot, a lot of this week was just trying to keep my flat together and not be in pieces, basically.

[00:09:12.01] - Gordon
It's funny, isn't it? Because when you get sort of involved in a project of some sort, you know, in your case coding or developing, you sort of, you spend all your brain power on that and you focus on it. And you sort of, you do other things and you look at things and go, "yeah, I'll deal with that later." And then, you know, you get to a point when that later is going to be now because it's stopping you from doing other things, or you've got no clean plates left, or you want a coffee and you can't have a coffee because the machine's broken. So you then have to go, "right, okay, prioritise, this needs doing now."

[00:09:47.28] - Taylor
Yeah, it's— I try and optimise and set up processes for things I don't like to do, but obviously when those break or something doesn't follow the same system, things go a bit haywire where I have plates all over the place because I can't put them in the dishwasher, which I'm— I normally just put in, then stick it on because it's quite a small dishwasher. You know, things like that where, you know, I want— you know, I don't want to think about that stuff, but I have to then deal with it. And what my normal week or what my normal process is can't be done, I have to then figure out another way to deal with it.

[00:10:27.11] - Gordon
Oh, well, at least you're gonna have at least two things working once you get the dishwasher fixed. And hopefully nothing else will happen because they do say things come in threes.

[00:10:38.14] - Taylor
Yeah.

[00:10:39.04] - Gordon
So let's hope it doesn't for you. Let's hope this is it. We've had our freezer that got to a point when you couldn't open the drawers because it was too frozen up. So we've had that defrosting all day. So we've got water all over the floor. Yeah.

[00:10:58.03] - Taylor
Lovely.

[00:10:58.18] - Gordon
Great. Yeah. All these things you have to do. Anything else you want to say today?

[00:11:03.28] - Taylor
Don't think so. I think the only thing is that on my list of things to do is to organise my finances and having these issues come up in the flat, I think highlights the fact I need to put a priority on that so that I can be putting, you know, I have money aside, but make sure that I know exactly how much I have and how much I'm putting aside every month, etc.

[00:11:26.05] - Gordon
Well, that's right, because you can't make decisions unless you've got all the facts. And if you don't know how much money you've got in your accounts and how much is available to you can't decide whether you can afford something or not. So, you know, you don't want to get into debt just because you haven't kept track of how much you've spent and how much you've got left.

[00:11:44.26] - Taylor
Yeah.

[00:11:45.17] - Gordon
Plus we've got 'Making Tax Digital' as well, which is, we're a month into that now. And one of the tasks for me is to go into my application and just label everything because I don't know how it's done. It's the first time I've done it, so I need to do that. And I've got two different accounts that I need to do, so that's a job for me, I need to add to my list. Anyway, thank you for joining us. That's everything from us today.
