And welcome back to "This Week with Taylor and Gordon." A weekly podcast and vidcast where we talk about things that have affected our businesses over the last seven days. And you'll notice we didn't have an episode last week, and that's because a certain person was not here. And we'll hear all about that in just a moment. First of all, any news?

So there is some news from Apple. The iOS update for iPads is now out.

And Ventura.

And Ventura is also out, which is the next operating system for the Mac computers. I haven't actually upgraded my Mac yet, but I have done my iPad. I normally find it's best to wait just a little while to see what breaks and what is fine on the new operating system on a computer, and I'll let other people do that for me before I upgrade.

They did actually have a small announcement with some new iPads and stuff like that, which they released.

They did indeed. Not a lot. There was a new Apple TV as well, I believe.

We use Apple TVs in this house. So, yeah, a few things that were going on, but nothing ground-breaking. Right, let's get straight into our topics. Let's start with you because everyone is dying to know what happened on your trip.

Yes, so my trip was great. So I flew out to New York and I spent four days there. I was on a bit of a different time zone to a lot of people in America, so I was waking up about 5-5:30 most days, which I quite enjoyed. It was quite nice. So I kind of got up at that time and then just went into central New York and just walked around the streets and just enjoyed being up there.

That doesn't sound very safe at all, just walking around the streets at 5 a.m. in New York. All the stories you hear, but you were fine.

Yeah, so I got breakfast most days at diners and things like that. I went to see the Brooklyn Bridge and walked over that, which was good. Went to Ellen Stardust Diner, which is where they kind of like, sing musicals and things like that. I went to coffee shops, spent quite a lot of time in coffee shops just working and...

Pretty much. But, yeah, I just kind of enjoyed myself. I didn't have any plans for any of the days, I just took it as it came.

And then I went to Ohio, which was great, and I got to see my friends. I have two friends that live out there, so I got to spend time seeing both of them. Trying new cuisines. Went to the Metro Park, which is like a big kind of wooded area, the nature park, things like that. And then I got my flights home. I got my flight to Chicago which is an enormous airport, took us about 15 minutes just to taxi to the gate, not even getting out, just taxiing to the actual gate and it's like one of the busiest airports in America, and also the world. But yeah, it was good, I enjoyed it. I got to sit in World Traveller Plus on the way back from New York, sorry, from Chicago. So there was an A380 I think, or something like that, one of the big aircraft.

Yeah, one of the big planes. I got to sit upstairs, which was quite exciting and yeah, I got really comfy seats and there was no-one sitting next to me actually, which was quite nice. I got to spread out and just enjoy...

And I got WiFi, well I bought WiFi on there so I could still talk to my friends. Yeah, it was a great flight, it went really quick. A lot quicker than the flight out there did. It was slightly shorter coming back but also it was just more enjoyable coming back.

Yeah, mainly because of the weather conditions right?

And then you got back to the UK on Tuesday of this week and that was at like, you were touching down at like 6:40 in the morning. Honestly, who's going to come out and pick you up from Heathrow Airport which is like an hour away without any traffic?

I took off the day before I landed.

Because I took off on the Monday. I landed on the Tuesday.

Yeah, but I mean who would come and pick you up in that sort of situation?

Aww! It was me. I did it. Yeah. So that was a busy day. So are you back to the normal sort of time zone now?

Slightly. I still think that I'm kind of just in between really. I'm like in between the time zones because obviously the five hour difference but yeah, I feel like I'm slightly in between the two 5 hours; not 5 hours behind, not five hours ahead. I'm kind of just in the middle really.

It's always a problem when you get a night flight that lands early in the morning at a destination when you've got an international flight which messes up your time zones because what do you do? You land at sort of silly o'clock in the morning, do you then stay awake until it's bedtime and then go to bed and try and see if your body clock has caught up? Or do you go back to bed and have a sleep and risk it being messed up for the next sort of week? It's really difficult to know what to do, but yeah, soon you'll be back to this time zone again.

Good. Well, I'm so glad you had a good time and you saw lots of people, you saw lots of things. You also managed to do some work out there so that sort of gave you an idea as to whether you would be able to work from anywhere and be able to travel more if you wanted to, right?

Yeah. I mean, I really enjoyed the travelling and just being independent, I really enjoyed. It was a lot of fun. I had to obviously, look after all my stuff, make sure I had everything with me all the time. But, yeah, I enjoyed it.

And you didn't take any big bags with you, did you? You just took, like, a rucksack and a small bag that you used, which you could take on the aeroplane with you, basically.

Yeah, so I had a duffel bag and I had my backpack and that was it. And I kind of wanted to keep it like that to keep how much I took with me down. But also, it's just so much easier and quicker than having to wait for the carousels to let your bags through.

And also, it's just easier in general because you've got to carry or take it around with you.

Well, if you're travelling from one state to another, then, yes, of course you've got to take it with you, so the less you take with you is an advantage. Plus, I think you were staying in some hostels at one point, and in a hostel, you want to make sure that everything's safe. So did you have lockers?

Yes, there was lockers and luckily I had my David Lloyd's locker lock with me.

Oh so they didn't have locks on them? Oh.

No, a lot of people didn't lock their stuff up, probably just because they didn't have a lock with them. So yeah, my spare lock that I bought, that I leave in my bag came in handy.

That's really good. Yeah. Fantastic. I'm so glad you had a good time and you managed to do some tutorials for Snippet Club while you were over there, which I would... Anyone who's a member will know already, and if you're not, go and become a member. Right, shall I talk about my topic? So, this past weekend, on the Sunday, I went out and had a test drive of a Tesla. It's a lot of car, it's a lot of money, but I do need to change my car. And I sort of came to the conclusion that I wanted to get a plug-in hybrid because I wanted to make sure that I was sort of future proofing myself, in a way. And a plug-in hybrid seemed like the best option. And obviously, a Tesla is an all electric car, so I thought I would go and try it out. And it was very nice.

Yeah. It drove really nicely. I can't at the moment get my head around justifying spending that money on a car, because, I mean, we're talking about, just as an example at this, you know, time of recording, a sort of a 2017 model. Second-hand. Model S is going for about £40,000, and that's with, like 66,000 on the clock, which is, if it was a petrol or diesel car, you would go, "okay, that's quite high mileage," but... That's a time zone thing again. But for a Tesla, which sells for £120,000, when it's new, it's a lot less than a new one. But it still would require me to take out a loan to get it, and because I have a slight issue with the batteries as well. So you get an eight year warranty from Tesla for the batteries. So whenever it was registered, you get eight years from then. So, for example, a 2017 model is already on year five, which means it's got another three guaranteed years in the battery. Now, once you get to the end of that guarantee period, that car will lose a lot of value, I believe, because there's no warranty left on it as far as the battery goes. And an electric car requires a good battery. So if you've got no warranty on the battery, I think that the value's just going to tank. So do I want to spend a tonne of money for a car that I'm going to have for sort of three years, that really isn't going to have a very high resale value based on what I've spent on it? And the answer is probably no. For the similar sort of money, even half of that money, I could probably get a good second-hand plug-in hybrid that's got a lot less miles. There are other costs involved, but added together, they don't come to anything like what the Tesla does. So even though it's a lovely car and I would love to have one, now is not the time for me. If I came into some money in the future or I found that one of my businesses was doing particularly well and I had lots of money saved up, I might consider it again. But at this point, I don't think I'm going to go for it. However, that does leave me back at square one, trying to find a car that I can purchase that's got a boot that's large enough for what I need. And I don't want to go the sort of SUV route because they're too big for me. Most of the time, I'm sort of going to business meetings, or suppliers, or picking stuff up, and doing errands, and that would be too big for me. So I only really need the boot space when I'm performing. And the Ford that I've got, the Mondeo, is great because it's got a huge boot and I've got used to that and I've sort of built my equipment around having that space. So it's sort of causing me a few issues in the fact that I need to find something that can accommodate me. And I'm struggling at the moment. Although, I haven't really had a good look because I've sort of put everything on pause so I could go and look at Tesla's. So that's where I am. I will come back to you and let you know what I do in the future. I do need to change it because the ULEZ is being expanded and is going to come out to the M25, which means it's going to cost me £12.50 a day, or whatever they put it up to, just to drive off my driveway. And that's not something I can afford. So I do need to change my car. I have had this one for quite a long time and it's probably about time to change. Leasing is another option, something I need to look into, but I've always bought cars and I always sort of like the idea of either keeping it for long enough so that the value is just hardly anything, but I've had all the value out of it, or getting to a point when I want to change cars, and the car that I've got still has some value in it to either trade in or to sell privately. So I need to look into that and what's around, what make, what model. I'll come back to you and let you know.
